Paul Eppstein

1902–1944

Paul Maximilian Eppstein was born in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 1902. He studied law, political science, sociology and economics in Heidelberg, taught at the Mannheim commercial college and from 1928 directed the Mannheim adult education centre, which he turned into a leading institution of its kind. Removed from his posts in 1933, he moved into the leadership of the national Jewish representative body in Berlin, where, as a senior official of the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland, he was forced to negotiate with the Gestapo and the RSHA, above all over emigration. On 26 January 1943 he and his wife Hedwig were deported from Berlin to Theresienstadt on transport I/86, where he was made Judenältester, head of the ghetto's Jewish self-administration. In September 1944 he was arrested on a pretext and shot by the SS in the Small Fortress; the Bundesarchiv Memorial Book and the Terezín Initiative database give 28 September 1944, while some accounts give 27 September. His wife Hedwig was deported to Auschwitz in October 1944 and murdered.

Murdered in Theresienstadt (Small Fortress) on 28 September 1944.
