  The "Polenaktion": expulsion of Polish Jews from Berlin

  On 28 and 29 October 1938 about 17,000 Jews of Polish nationality were arrested throughout the Reich and forced across the Polish border. In Berlin more than 1,500 Jewish residents were arrested at home or in the street and taken to the border, most of them reaching the border town of Zbąszyń (Bentschen), where many had to live in makeshift shelters for about ten months. The exact number expelled from Berlin is not known; estimates range from 1,500 to 6,000.

  Hostage murders in Sachsenhausen after the Baum group attack

  After the arson attack by the resistance group around Herbert Baum on the propaganda exhibition "Das Sowjetparadies" in the Lustgarten (18 May 1942), the Gestapo drew up a list of 500 Berlin Jews to be held as "hostages"; 404 of them were taken to Sachsenhausen in two transports on 28 and 29 May. On 28/29 May the SS shot 250 Jewish men there: 96 who were already camp prisoners and 154 of the Berlin hostages. At least 126 of the other 250 hostages died in the camp in the following months; the rest were deported to Auschwitz with all the remaining Jewish prisoners on 22 October 1942. On 5 June 1942, 100 relatives of the men who had been shot were deported to Theresienstadt in a "Sondertransport".

  The "Gemeindeaktion" against the staff of the Berlin Jewish community

  On 20 October 1942 the Gestapo ordered the dismissal and deportation of about a third of the employees of the Jewish community of Berlin (533 staff and 328 relatives were named). Many were deported with the 22nd "Osttransport" to Riga on 26 October. Because 20 employees could not be found, the Gestapo arrested leading community and Reichsvereinigung staff on 10 November; according to contemporaries, eight of them were shot in Sachsenhausen, and others were deported with their relatives to Auschwitz on 9 December 1942.

  The "Fabrikaktion"

  On 27 February 1943 the Jews still doing forced labour in armaments factories were seized at their workplaces throughout the Reich. In Berlin six "Osttransporte" to Auschwitz followed between 1 and 12 March 1943. About 4,000 Berlin Jews went into hiding during these days. Jewish partners of "mixed marriages" arrested in the raid were held separately; 25 of them were deported to Auschwitz on 6 March and most were brought back to the Großbeeren labour camp near Berlin on 21 March 1943.

  RSHA order to deport the remaining Jews by 30 June 1943

  On 21 May 1943, on Himmler's orders, the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) directed that the remaining Jews in the Reich were to be deported "to the East" or to Theresienstadt by 30 June 1943, with narrow exceptions, chiefly Jews living in "mixed marriages". Afterwards only small groups, often people caught in hiding, were deported from Berlin; according to Yad Vashem, presumably in one or two cars attached to regular trains.
