Hannah Karminski
1897–1943
Hannah Karminski, registered at birth as Johanna Minna, was born in Berlin in 1897; the Bundesarchiv gives 24 April, while the header of her Stolperstein entry gives 26 April. She trained as a kindergarten teacher and social worker, and from 1924 worked as secretary of the Jüdischer Frauenbund (League of Jewish Women) and on the editorial staff of its newspaper. After 1938 she took charge of welfare work at the Reichsvereinigung der Juden in Deutschland and helped organise the Kindertransporte to Britain, each time returning to Berlin rather than staying abroad. She worked closely with Paula Fürst and Cora Berliner, and their deportation in June 1942 hit her hard. Arrested in December 1942 while ill with a high fever, she was deported to Auschwitz with the 24th 'Osttransport' on 9 December 1942. She did not survive; 4 June 1943 is recorded as her date of death, a date the Bundesarchiv marks as resting on a post-war declaration of death.
Murdered in Auschwitz on 4 June 1943.
