What happened

On arrival at Auschwitz-Birkenau the SS carried out a selection; most deportees were murdered in the gas chambers, and a minority were sent to forced labour, which few survived.

Notes on the sources

Count: statistik-des-holocaust.de 811 on the Gestapo list (792 with a Berlin address); Gottwaldt/Schulle 815; Gleis 17 plate 811; Yad Vashem 815. Among the deportees were 48 young people from the home at Rosenstraße 2–4 and 18 inmates of the Britz forest camp near Eberswalde (statistik-des-holocaust.de). The Gleis 17 plate gives the destination as "Riga", contradicting all other sources. According to Yad Vashem, the Auschwitz death register suggests that the last person from this transport selected for labour was dead by early February 1943.
