What happened

At Birkenau the deportees were divided into columns; according to survivor Fritz Pagel only about 20–25 men and some women were kept alive, while the others, including women with children, were murdered in the gas chambers (Yad Vashem).

Count: statistik-des-holocaust.de 99 on the Gestapo list (97 with a Berlin address); Gottwaldt/Schulle 100; Gleis 17 plate 99; Yad Vashem 100. Survivor Fritz Pagel, appointed "Transportleiter", recalled 99 people in two closed cars attached to a passenger train to Silesia and described the selection in Birkenau (Yad Vashem). Survivors: Rita Meyhöfer, as cited by Yad Vashem. Station: not stated. From August 1943 Yad Vashem describes these small transports as one or two closed freight cars presumably attached to a regular train; survivor Fritz Pagel (transport 40) remembered being taken to a station that was "possibly Jungfernheide".
