62. Osttransport

What happened

According to survivors' testimonies and International Tracing Service data cited by Yad Vashem, the group travelled in the same car as the "Alterstransport" I/122 and was taken on arrival to the Gestapo prison in the Small Fortress (Kleine Festung) at Theresienstadt, where conditions were brutal until liberation in May 1945.

Notes on the sources

Destination disputed: statistik-des-holocaust.de and Gleis 17 give "Ravensbrück/Sachsenhausen" (Gleis 17 with 23 people), as the separate men's and women's lists would suggest; Yad Vashem concludes from survivor affidavits and ITS data that the group went to the Small Fortress in Theresienstadt, and is followed here. Included in this dataset because it is a numbered "Osttransport"; these 25 people are additional to the 38 people of transport I/122 to the Theresienstadt ghetto on the same day (Bundesarchiv chronology), so there should be no double counting with the Theresienstadt dataset. The id carries the suffix -2 because the Theresienstadt dataset uses 1945-02-02-theresienstadt for I/122. Count: 25 (14 men, 11 women) per Yad Vashem and statistik-des-holocaust.de (16 with a Berlin address). Station: Anhalter Bahnhof, from survivor testimonies cited by Yad Vashem; at least one deportee escaped on the way. Survivors: at least 7 gave testimony after the war (Yad Vashem); exact number unknown, minimum recorded.
