Lilli Henoch

born 1899

Lilli Henoch was born in Königsberg in 1899 and moved to Berlin with her family in 1919, where she joined the Berliner Sport-Club. Between 1922 and 1926 she won ten German championships in the shot put, discus, long jump and 4 x 100 metres relay and set four world records, and in January 1933 she was elected head of the club's women's athletics section. In August 1933 the club expelled her because she was Jewish; she then built up the handball team of the Jüdischer Turn- und Sportclub 1905 and taught physical education at the Jewish school in Rykestraße until it was closed in June 1942. Afterwards she was put to work as a harvest labourer at Neuendorf near Fürstenwalde, while living with her mother in a sublet room at Kleiststraße 36. She and her mother Rose were deported to Riga with the 19th 'Osttransport' and murdered immediately after arrival. The Memorial Book and her Stolperstein biography give 5 September 1942 for the deportation and 8 September 1942 for her death, but the Bundesarchiv's own chronology and research in the Gestapo and Reichsvereinigung records date the train's departure to 31 August 1942, so her exact date of death remains uncertain.

Murdered in near Riga.
