Else Ury
1877–1943
Else Ury was born in 1877 in central Berlin into a Jewish family that had lived in the city for three generations. She became one of the best-known authors for young readers in the 1920s; her ten-volume 'Nesthäkchen' series, completed by 1925, reached millions of readers. Her last book appeared in 1933; under Nazi rule the family was stripped of its rights, and after the November 1938 pogrom her brother Ludwig and her sister Käthe left Germany for London and Amsterdam. Forced to move into a so-called 'Judenhaus' at Solinger Straße 10, she cared for her mother there until her mother's death in 1940. On 6 January 1943 she was taken to the assembly camp at Große Hamburger Straße 26, and on 12 January she was deported to Auschwitz with the 26th 'Osttransport'. She was murdered in the gas chambers on arrival, on 13 January 1943.
Murdered in Auschwitz-Birkenau on 13 January 1943.
